The following courses are highly recommended for all ACE positions:
The interdisciplinary and critical scholarship of African & African American Studies can inform the ways in which ACE supports the African diaspora community on- and off-campus. If you have taken, or plan to take, any of these courses, we highly encourage you to apply for any of the positions with ACE. However, these courses are not required for consideration in our application process.
AAS 010: African American Culture and Society (4)
Lecture—3 hours; discussion—1 hour. Critical examination of the historical, political, social, and economic factors that have affected the development and status of African-American people in contemporary society.
Student Director (SD)/Recruitment & Retention Organizing Committee (RROC) Representative
The Student Director will have oversight of ACE’s programs and coordinators. They will work towards supporting and helping build cohesion and unity within ACE, the SRRC, and the greater African Diaspora student community at UC Davis.
The Student Director will be responsible for:

Providing holistic support, supervision, and programmatic guidance to all ACE coordinators and general members (I.e. Host weekly/ bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with ACE program coordinators).

Facilitating ACE Weekly Staff meetings.
-
Reviewing all ACE's proposals to ensure the accuracy of funding requests and alignment with SRRC values.
-
Providing continuous, ongoing evaluation of all ACE initiatives.
-
Developing and implementing quarterly staff retreats, including a transition retreat.
-
Serving as Co-chair on the Black Leadership Council.
-
Assisting in the planning and organization of various ACE events/activities and/or African diaspora community events.
-
Co-coordinating the UCD ABC Conference Delegation alongside other student leaders.
-
Attending Student Director meetings to discuss various SRRC topics.
-
Attending weekly meetings with SRRC Career Staff.
The Recruitment and Retention Organizing Committee (RROC) is the decision-making body of the Student Recruitment & Retention Center. As a RROC representative, the Student Director forms part of this governing board and holds voting privileges. RROC has oversight for all SRRC finances, SRRC operations and recruitment/retention initiatives. Furthermore, RROC provides advocacy surrounding issues of educational equity.
A RROC representative will be responsible for:

Promoting transparency between RROC and the SRRC staff.

Attending weekly RROC Board meetings to represent the African Diaspora Community.

Providing the African Diaspora Community with updates from the RROC Board.

Allocating funding to support SRRC initiatives.

Planning monthly staff in-service.

Maintaining and promoting a welcoming, inclusive environment for the overall SRRC.

Creating awareness to the general public of issues pertaining to your respective community.

Administrative Coordinator
The Administrative Coordinator supports and helps build cohesion and unity within the community program through: facilitating the Volunteer and Internship Program, handling administrative tasks, and supporting other coordinators.
The Administrative Coordinator will be responsible for:

Program and event logistics such as room reservations.

Supporting purchase requests and submission of final expense reports.
-
Sending weekly newsletters to community members.
-
Overseeing and updating all ACE social media accounts (e.g. Facebook, Instagram) to promote events, generate publicity, and maintain the program’s consistent presence over all forums.

Organizing and implementing the Volunteer/Internship Program.
-
Supporting ACE staff as needed with their programming.

Developing & coordinating Community Empowerment programs/events for the African Diaspora Community.

Serving as a core member of the Administrative Committee.
Recruitment Positions
Community Youth Development Coordinator
The Community Youth Development Coordinator will partner with local Black youth programs/centers (e.g., My Other Brother/ Sister, Sisters of Nia) to empower students to pursue their personal and educational endeavors. By outreaching to Black youth programs and centers, the coordinator will discuss local issues and organize methods to effectively address, visibilize, and transform the needs of youth in the African Diaspora. Additionally, the coordinator will provide mentorship and support through educational workshops ranging from Black history, culture, higher education, creative expression, and self-care.
The Community Youth Development Coordinator will be responsible for:

Working closely with the Community Advisor for Recruitment and the ACE Student Director to:

Establish partnerships with local Black Youth Coalitions that have high population of Africa Diaspora students (consider schools where students are at-risk and underserved).

Seek support and resources.

Creating and sustaining positive working relationships with professional staff at respective high school and middle school sites (e.g. teachers, counselors, principal, secretary).

Coordinating on-campus events for school groups or programs with large populations of Black or African students

Supporting the High School Outreach Coordinator in monthly outreaches local Black Youth Coalitions

Co-coordinating the annual Leslie Campbell Black Youth Leadership Conference, with assistance from the High School Outreach Coordinator. This position serves as the lead coordinator.

Co-coordinating the annual SRRC Recruitment event, Aggie Senior Weekend Trip, with fellow Recruitment coordinators.

Serving as a core member of the SRRC's Recruitment Committee.

High School Outreach Coordinator
The High School Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for developing a culturally relevant, captivating and informative outreach program that will empower, educate, and promote a college-going culture.
The High School Outreach will be responsible for:

Working closely with the Community Advisor for Recruitment and the ACE Student Director to:

Establish partnerships with high school(s) that have high population of Africa Diaspora students (consider schools where students are at-risk and underserved).

Seek support and resources.

Creating and sustaining positive working relationships with the professional staff at the respective high school sites (e.g. teachers, counselors, principal, secretary).
-
Building rapport with parents/guardians of outreach participants: creating and sending a letter about services, and offering a fall parent/guardian workshop/orientation.
-
Establishing agreements with high schools over the summer with assistance from a Community Advisor (MOU: Memorandum of Understanding).
-
Conducting weekly or regular high school outreach visits to 1 or 2 high schools with a highly population of African-American students.
-
Providing guidance for high school students ranging from freshmen to seniors, based on their individual needs.
-
Assisting high school seniors with navigating the college application process and helping students make necessary revisions to their Personal Statements.

Retention Positions
Identity Development Coordinator
The Identity Development Coordinator aims to empower the African Diaspora Community by addressing issues centered around the following four SRRC Holistic Initiatives: Gender & Sexuality, Community Development, Health & Wellness and Cultural Identity.
The Identity Development Coordinator will be responsible for developing and coordinating retention programs and strategies in the following areas:

Gender & Sexuality: Supporting the Blaqueer community, and serving as a liaison between the Blaqueer community, ACE, and the larger African diaspora at UC Davis; facilitating spaces which are inclusive and welcoming of all identities and encouraging the understanding of multiple, intersectional identities.

Community Development: Co-coordinating large-scale community events to promote a sense of belonging and/or inform community about issues facing the African Diaspora community.
-
Health & Wellness: Promoting the wellbeing of both physical and mental health, sharing health & wellness resources.
-
Cultural Identity: Defining and/or deconstructing what Blackness means at UC Davis, and focusing on intersectional identities within the African Diaspora as related to issues of educational equity.
Additionally, the Identity Development Coordinator will:

Work closely with the ACE Student Director and Community Advisor for Retention to develop programs (ex. Creating budgets and proposals for all events/programming).

Student Academic Achievement Coordinator
The Student Achievement Coordinator aims to empower the African Diaspora Community by providing resources and information to ensure the holistic achievement of African Diaspora students at UC Davis. This support comes in many forms and areas, such as the transition from high school to college, academic preparation and readiness, leadership opportunities, building professionalism to empower students to graduate from UC Davis and to successfully build a career post-graduation.
The Student Achievement Coordinator will be responsible for developing and coordinating retention programs and strategies in the following areas:

Academic Excellence: Working closely with CADSS, the African American Studies Department, EOP, and other partners to address any issues that may be impacting the academic success of students within the African Diaspora.

Leadership Development: Coordinating and sharing leadership opportunities and resources with the community.
-
Mentorship: Coordinating ACE’s mentorship program.
-
Life After College Success: Co-hosting a Pathway to Graduate School workshop in partnership with SRRC’s GAAAP, ACE alumni, and/or African & African-American graduate/professional school students; organizing a workshop series for graduating seniors.

Attending weekly staff meetings, weekly or bi-weekly one-on-ones with your student director AND the Community Advisor, SRRC In Service, and any meeting depending on your position.

Creating a budget and proposal for each activity/event or strategy.

Ensuring that activities/events are catered to serve the African Diaspora community.

Evaluating respective programs on a regular basis and gathering feedback from your participants.

Representing ACE and the SRRC professionally, as well as being able to articulate the mission and goals of both ACE and the SRRC to staff, faculty, students, and other audiences.

Advocating and upholding the values of ACE and the SRRC throughout all programs.

Coordinating intern and volunteer projects to provide them with valuable experience.

Maintaining a cumulative 2.5 GPA and full-time student status.

Working with students to holistically address their needs.

Supporting major community events.

Being active in the greater African diaspora community to ensure that the needs of the target population are being addressed.

Maintaining consistent communication/correspondence with partners/collaborators as it pertains to programming efforts.
